The retail strategy is normally devised or reviewed every 3– 5 years by the chief executive officer. In the post-war period, an American architect, Victor Gruen developed a concept for a shopping mall; a planned, self-contained shopping complex complete with an indoor plaza, statues, planting schemes, piped music, and car-parking. Gruen’s vision was to create a shopping atmosphere where people felt so comfortable, they would spend more time in the environment, thereby enhancing opportunities for purchasing.
Pre-packaged goods, fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products were not available at the grocery store. You had to visit the butcher, or the greengrocer, or the dairy to buy these items. Primarily truck transportation services (e.g, used to carry goods, such as clothing and food, to stores), which accounted for 62.6 percent ($174,882 million) of all transportation services used by the sector. Primary – The primary retail trade area is the geographic region that produces 50 to 80 percent of a store’s sales. This is the most important trade area for most retailers because it is the draw area for their most frequent customers.
Retailers provide customer experiences that manufacturers and wholesalers would be hard-pressed to achieve. In essence, retailing is the culmination of many different processes brought together to create sales. This figure represents the average value of all resources controlled by an enterprise as a result of past transactions or events from which future economic benefits may be obtained. This percentage represents all other assets not elsewhere recorded, such as long-term bonds.
In wholesale trade, management positions primarily include sales and marketing positions, while managers in retailing are more likely to be running a retail outlet. Faster-than-average GDP growth, combined with slower-than-average increases in employment, means that labour productivity is rising in this industry. Both wholesale & retail trade have experienced relatively strong productivity growth during the last decade, well above the provincial average. These productivity improvements may be linked to some of the technological and process changes that have been introduced in recent years.
Store retailers operate fixed point-of-sale locations, located and designed to attract a high volume of walk-in customers. In general, retail stores have extensive displays of merchandise and use mass-media advertising to attract customers. They typically sell merchandise to the general public for personal or household consumption, but some also serve business and institutional clients. These include establishments, such as office supply stores, computer and software stores, building materials dealers, plumbing supply stores, and electrical supply stores.
